Residential School for the Blind, Chikhaldara

Residential School for the Blind, run by this NAWPH at Chikhaldara, has been workingto educate children with visual impairment of Melghat tribal region. The School was established by the Association in the Year 1991, when the office bearers visited the tribal Korku community of Melghat and realized the essence of the School to provide a Residential Special Education Setup for the Visually Challenged Children of the Region. At present, a total no. 32 Teaching and Non-teaching Staff members are very dedicatedly working for education and a better health care of 90 young Visually Impaired Children basically belong to tribal “Korku” community. The School is Recognised and Licentiate by the Commissionerate for the Persons with Disabilities.

This is a Unique Project in the Entire State of Maharashtra to run such an activity for Education and Rehabilitation of the Children of Melghat Tribal Region especially, the Children with Visual Challenges. The Foundation Stone of the Residential School for the Blind, Chikhaldara was laid by the-then Chief Minister, Hon’ble Late Shri Sudhakarrao Naik in 1991 and initially he had supported with Rs. 50,000/- from Chief Minister’s Fund. As most of the parents belong to Below Poverty Line and they are not able to support their Wards for Secondary & Higher Education, we have up-graded the School up to Std. X.

At present, 90 Visually Impaired Students are benefiting from the Activity with Special Education and other support services. With up-gradation of the School up to Standard X, the Institution has been trying to increase its necessary facilities.

The Institution has planned to make this Activity as a Model in the Country, as it is the only School for the Visually Challenged Tribe Students in the State. Equip with all required facilities e.g. all short of Educational Facilities, Vocational Education Wing, Set-up for Computer Education, Art & Crafts, Library Services, Music, and Laboratory for Science instructions etc. We are very much hopeful that, this goal can be achieved with the help of such like-minded people and philanthropic organizations.

During the year, Residential School for the Blind, Chikhaldara is celebrating the Silver Jubilee Year of the School. During the Inaugural celebration, the Institution had organized the State level Inter-school Cricket Tournament along with music competitions for the Blind at Chikhaldara in March, 2016 to accelerate the inherent potentials of the students with visual impairments. A total number of 10 Cricket Teams and more than 100 students for music competition from different parts of State were participated.
